Expectations of Students

Students are expected to complete all assessment tasks and assignments required as part of the assessment program.

  • All summative and formative tasks must be completed or handed in on the due date and cut off time.
  • The due date and time can be set by the teacher but can be negotiated with the student group if necessary.
  • The common tasks set by each faculty must be adhered to and results published in SEQTA Marks Book.
  • Teachers may accept late assignments under certain circumstances; but the individual arrangements with students must not compromise the fairness and equity for the whole group of students.
  • It is a student’s responsibility, not the teacher’s, to make sure that tasks are completed or handed in on the due date.
  • Turnitin must be used when teachers have indicated this is the case.

Negotiated Extentions before a due date

The grounds for extension are to be determined by the school and will naturally represent a balance between compassion to an individual and fairness to the whole group of students involved.

  • Student must approach subject teacher (physically or electronically)
  • Subject teacher can approve an extension and check in with CL if necessary (to ensure consistency)
  • A reason must be given by the student
  • This reason must be considered alongside other evidence and logged (SEQTA / Marks book)
  • Partially completed work must submitted for evidence
  • A note must be added to SEQTA if the extension is given, alerting the parents and formalising the process
  • The finalised work must be submitted by the new deadline
  • If the work is not submitted, then the student forgoes the drafting process If the work is not submitted students will receive a zero

Missed Deadlines

Failure to hand in a summative assessment task by the due date:

  • If the student is legitimately absent on due date:
  • They should still submit to SEQTA Marks Book during the absence
  • Or submit to SEQTA Marks Book (or email teacher or hand in at office) on return to school
  • The class teacher will inform the student of the result. (eg substitute task, full credit, zero marks).

If the student is not absent on due date, but the summative assessment task is not handed in:

  • Submit to SEQTA Marks Book as soon as possible after the date
  • Accept that grades will naturally be affected

Grading for Years 7 - 10

  • All submitted work must be graded fairly using the appropriate Achievement Standards, rubric or SACE Performance Standards
  • Late submissions will be offered feedback but may not be offered a grade
  • There must be consistency of approach for late submissions, outlined below
  • The Behaviour and Learning Management System must be applied by the teacher for repeated instances of late work

Late work for 7 – 10 students

If no extension has been requested, the work is marked for feedback, but no grade is awarded and a zero will read in the Marks Book. For Years 7 and 8 teachers should follow the flowchart below to encourage students to complete the assessments/tasks before awarding a zero. The late submission is logged in SEQTA with suggestions for positive support and advice also offered in the feedback to allow the student to get back on track.

In difficult circumstances the Curriculum Leader and Director of Learning will be consulted and can decide if the late assessment task will be given full credit or zero marks.

Late work for SACE Students

  • All submitted work must be graded fairly using the appropriate rubric or SACE Performance Standards
  • There must be consistency of approach for late submissions
  • The Behaviour and Learning Management System must be applied for repeated instances of late work, along with SACE guidelines

If no extension is requested, the work is marked for feedback, but no grade is awarded (in SEQTA it will be logged that the submission was late). Suggestions for positive support and advice also offered in the feedback to allow the student to get back on track. In difficult circumstances the Curriculum Leader and Director of Learning will be consulted and can decide if the late assessment task will be given full credit, partial credit or zero marks.

In the event that a student may fail their SACE dependent on the grade, the Director of Learning, the Head of House and the relevant Curriculum Leader must be consulted.
