Tanzeed – A Walk With Purpose
For the past three years, the Westminster community has supported the development of a school in Tanzania, Africa.
Geography teacher Adam Burford first became aware of the need while visiting the region during his studies in International Development.
With no local government school, students in Kiserian faced a gruelling 14-kilometre walk—each way—just to access education.
Recognising this challenge, Adam launched TANZEED, a local organisation dedicated to empowering Tanzanians through education, with the goal of building a school to provide local children with access to learning.
The Walk to Westminster
Inspired by this initiative and realising he lived a similar distance from Westminster, School Chaplain Rev Phil Hoffmann decided to walk to school to raise awareness and funds. In its first year, 33 Senior students joined him at Henley Square at 5.45 am, with more joining along the way. Last year, participation grew to 190 students and staff, raising over $11,000.
Join Us in 2025
This year’s walk will take place on Friday 4 April (Week 10). To arrive in time for the school day, participants will begin the 14-kilometre walk from Henley Square, Henley Beach at 5.30 am.
- As a Senior School initiative, the walk is open exclusively to Year 11 and 12 students.
- Students in Years 7 – 10 can get involved through special lunchtime activities at school.
- Students participating in the walk may wear their Physical Education uniform for the school day.
Supporting the Cause
Thanks to the Westminster community’s generosity, the school in Tanzania now supports 300 students and has celebrated its first graduating class. This year, our fundraising goal is to build an additional classroom to accommodate the growing student numbers.
