Tresna Giles, Year 11
Congratulations to Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) student Tresna, who recently won the ABC Heywire Competition.
Heywire is a storytelling competition from the ABC, seeking stories from young people aged 16-22 in regional, rural and remote Australia. Tresna’s powerful story was selected from many, and in addition to having her story shared on the ABC, she will travel to Canberra for the Heywire Summit, where she will collaborate with other young leaders to develop ideas to improve life in regional Australia.

Music
Jazz SA Superbands
We are proud to celebrate the selection of Westminster students Janet, Henry, Dylan, Harry and Hugh for the Jazz SA Superbands — a prestigious state program that supports and showcases South Australia’s most promising young jazz musicians aged 14 to 25.
With limited places available, selection for the Jazz SA Superbands is a significant achievement, and a reflection of each student’s talent, dedication and passion for music.
Academic
Diya Patel, Year 12
Diya has been awarded The Hardwicke Prize for Biology in 2024, recognising the highest achievement in the Stage 2 Biology examination across South Australia.
Giving
Max Scutchings, Year 11
In support of SA Police Legacy, Max and his dad David, South Australian police officer and passionate pilot, set out to break the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive inside loops in a glider — a record that previously stood at 24. Together, they soared well beyond that, completing an extraordinary 45 loops and setting a new world record.
Old Scholars
Kyle Chenoweth (’18)
Kyle continues to make significant strides in the jazz world, earning national and international recognition for his talent and dedication to music. A gifted trombone player, Kyle was recently selected for the prestigious Australian National Jazz Orchestra (ANJO) — the only brass player from South Australia to receive this honour. In 2024, he performed at the Sydney University Jazz Festival and is set to perform at the Perth International Jazz Festival later this year.
Earlier this year, Kyle travelled to New York City where he successfully auditioned for The New School in Manhattan, a renowned institution for contemporary music.
Kyle’s passion for music began at Westminster, where he was a standout performer in our Jazz program. He was selected for the Generations in Jazz Superband on bass trombone and held the first trombone chair for the following two years. He was also a long-time member of the Jazz SA Superbands.
Kyle recently completed an Honours project exploring the connection between visual art and music, composing pieces inspired by artists such as Kandinsky and Dali. The resulting album, Perspectives, is set to be released in June 2025.
Kyle’s achievements are a source of inspiration to our community, and we look forward to following his continued success.
Westminster Swimming Team Triumphs at Secondary Swimming Championships
Westminster’s swim team has made a splash at the Secondary Swimming Championships this month, securing two major titles in the B Grade competition.
Claiming the Combined Score Shield, this award acknowledges Westminster for its strong performance in the pool across both boys' and girls' events. Additionally, the School secured the B Grade Boys Shield after a dominant display in their races.
A highlight of the event included the performance by Year 7 student Zach Kerber, who shattered the State 13 & Under backstroke record.
“This was an extraordinary feat, especially considering backstroke is not Zach’s primary stroke,” Westminster Senior Swimming Team Manager, Kathy Ayliffe said.
Zach joined Westminster this year after growing up in Queensland, continuing a family connection with the School— his uncle, Andrew Friebe ’99 is an Old Scholar.
Westminster’s swim team was led by Swimming Captain Bella Muldoon, who delivered an exceptional performance, winning all of her individual races, including 50m Butterfly, 50m Backstroke, 100m Freestyle and the 50m Freestyle.
“Bella is one of South Australia’s top young swimmers and a fantastic leader for our team,” Kathy said.
“She sets the standard for younger swimmers and has a bright future ahead.”
This year’s success in the pool, highlights the depth of talent within the Westminster squad, particularly among the senior boys.
“We have a very strong senior boys’ contingent this year,” Kathy said.
“While we will lose some of our Year 12 swimmers, the talent in Years 10 and 11 is exciting for the future and based on our performance this year, there is a strong chance we will return to A Grade next year.”
The Westminster girls’ team finished sixth overall, although their result was impacted by the absence of two of the School’s top swimmers—one due to illness and another who was unable to compete.
“Had those two swimmers been available, we would have been in a much stronger position. Either way, we are still very proud of the effort put in by our girls' team.”
