Ethan's advocacy at Parliament House
Congratulations to Westminster student, Ethan Greenfield (Year 7), who recently travelled to Parliament House in Canberra to share his story and advocate for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
Having been diagnosed with T1D at just four years of age, Ethan has been instrumental, working closely with JDRF to advocate and spread awareness for T1D and highlight the importance of continued research and funding to find a cure.
This November, Ethan joined 100 JDRF advocates from across the country to attend 'Kids in the House' at Parliament House, where they spent the day meeting with key decision-makers to discuss continued funding for critical research into T1D.
As one of three advocates chosen to feature in the campaign, and with a goal to secure a commitment of $50 million, Ethan attended many meetings with Senators and Members of Parliament, delivered a speech to Federal Members of Parliament in The Great Hall at Parliament House, and had the pleasure of meeting Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese in his courtyard.
Following Ethan's visit alongside fellow JDRF advocates, the Federal Government announced a commitment of $50.1 million towards clinical research into T1D, which then received bipartisan support, with the Liberal Party pledging $50.2 million should they be in government. Ethan was thrilled to share a celebratory handshake with Health Minister, Mark Butler following the announcement.
As the representative for the Boothby electorate in South Australia, Ethan has a strong relationship with Federal Member, Louise Miller-Frost. Louise has supported Ethan's advocacy for many years; and during her speech in Question Time immediately following the announcement, referenced Ethan and his journey with T1D.
Westminster School congratulates Ethan for his bravery, determination, tenacity, and commitment to raising awareness, and working toward building a brighter future.
