Westminster Weekly - Edition 11
Westminster Lamb and Shiraz Sale
The Sturt Grove Farm Shop will be open each afternoon next week, Monday 7 April to Thursday 10 April, from 3.15 to 5.00 pm.
Our Year 10 Ag classes begin each year with a knowledge-rich and hands-on unit focused on sheep, particularly meat and wool production. This year, students completed a feed trial comparing three different breeds: a British meat breed (Border Leicester), a Suffolk over Merino cross, and a full Merino.
All sheep were run in identical conditions; same paddocks, same feed, and same treatment, with students weighing them weekly to track growth. The British meat breed led in growth rate, followed closely by the crossbred and the Merino, known for its wool and large frame, came in third.
The final process in this unit was rounded out with the processing by our valued partners, including finishing through Thomas Farms in Cavan. The lamb produced reflects the care, environment, and attention to detail our students have maintained throughout the trial. Carcasses have been described as premium quality—with tender meat, excellent marbling, and consistently high remarks.
